What are your thoughts on, or experiences with, pitbull bans and/or other breed-specific legislation?

the people that own pitbulls are seemingly less responsible than other breeds' owners

It really, really depends on who owns them. I had a pitbull for 16 years (yes, she lived a looong time and honestly she was extremely healthy for all but the last month of her life). She was my baby, and she knew it too. Smartest dog I ever saw, with a sixth sense that just blew me out of the water (she would get agitated and bark at 2AM because a little pond frog hopped on our patio outside the french doors--I have no idea how she even heard it or sensed it, and she would also know that the feral cats were on the porch even when she was sleeping on the third floor of the old house). We never set out to own a pitbull. It's a long, shitty story how we got her involving a nasty, animal abusing dog catcher who wanted to catch her and kill her because he was angry that she was too street smart to fall for any of his dog traps. She was a fighting dog that had gotten loose from one of the local underground rings a state over, she wasn't even one year old yet, and she was pregnant.

Despite her past, she was the most amazing, protective, incredible dog ever. She was what my mother and I used to joke was "personality plus", I think anybody who owns a pitbull can tell you what ridiculous hams they can be, and mine was no different, her combination of devious street smarts (she was the only dog I've ever seen who had multi-step plans on how to steal food when you weren't looking) and her big heart changed pretty much everything I ever thought I knew about the breed.

Yes, they are powerful. My dog was 65 pounds and bit things over twice as hard as my 95 pound German Shepard did. But...ugh, I don't know, the shitty culture around pitbulls makes me so sad because I look back at when I was swayed by that (I still remember seeing her poor little scrawny, underfed body running down the street before we got her, and thinking "oh no, is that a pitbull?"), and then having owned and loved one I guess I just feel that reputation is so undeserved. It really isn't the breed, it's the culture surrounding them, and it's also newer selective breeding by assholes who want to maximize size, power and aggression.
