What Have You Been Listening To? - Week of February 08, 2021

I have been trying to keep an open mind and listen to artists outside of my comfort zone.

LiL PEEP: If you're older, then it's likely you might have some reservations listening to a rapper with face tats who sadly overdosed. I started to check out his music a few weeks ago, and I have to say the appeal of his music is not about lyrical genius or astounding production quality. The appeal of his music is partly his catchy anthems, but mostly attributed to the raw emotion he puts into his songs, which to me is the heart of music.

After looking into his background, he was actually a nice and seemingly intelligent dude. His parents were both Harvard grads, and he pursued his dream by moving out to LA and occasionally being homeless living in Skid Row. He has so many songs out on his SoundCloud account, he was no slouch and had a good work ethic. He was vocal about being against the abuse of women. I remember resenting people by comparing him to Kurt Cobain, but he really does have a lot of similarities. He is a pioneer of "emo rap" which is still increasingly popular, just as Kurt was a defining image of grunge.
