I don’t live in the USA. Outside of it we know that the average worker there has been left behind financially. They were fucked over by politicians being paid off by large corporations and the extremely wealthy.

I live in Canada and TBH, my income has kept up with inflation, healthcare is not an issue and a decent life is still possible.

That being said, we have the same problem with young men here falling victim to the description of those in that book. It even explains the porn but not from a simple interpersonal perspective. One that I think you will appreciate.
