I once spent the summer working as a waiter/bartender on a Greek island. The resort was pretty popular with foreign tourists. The Greek bosses liked to hire foreigners because they could pay cash in hand and treat you however they liked. Plus we could speak better English to the tourists.

When a Greek boss would fire someone they would give them a 'night off' and then simply replace them so when the hapless worker returned the following day they would find they had been replaced! Since tourist work is 7 days a week with no days off we soon realised that getting a 'night off' meant we were basically fired.

We even had a term for it, the 'Greek night off'. It was just so absurdly passive aggressive it made me laugh.
