What is the graphic design community like? Not just Reddit but IRL. I'm not a designer but just judging by this subreddit you all seem to enjoy attacking one another.

Man, I don't even know where to begin ... Firstly, you starting a discussion with you all seem to enjoy attacking one another. already sets a negative tone for anyone who might want to chime in on this discussion.

Secondly, I wondered what caused you to post this rude rhetorical question instead of keeping it to yourself, so I checked out your comment history. Seems like you're fresh off of an internet fight, so now you assume that since you argued with someone or saw something in a subreddit, that millions of human beings who have this job all share one personality. Come on man, you know better than this.

I honestly assumed you were roughly 16-18 years old by how emotional you were getting in some of your comments, but saw that you said you're 30. We're the same age, so I'm politely telling you that you are being too sensitive. And please know I mean no disrespect in saying that, or saying any of this. These are internet strangers and/or random trolls, who cares, fuck them, find your own way through life, you don't need our approval. Anyway, I'll answer your question nonetheless. The design community in real life is actually pretty decent, especially in big cities. Big cities is where you'll find most designers working a real job. And since there's a lot of us in one place, there are often design related social gatherings, art shows, creative conferences, all of that fun stuff. When a designer meets another design IRL, it's actually very cordial. We often have the same problems with clients, annoying bosses, same issues to solve at work, and most of us have answers for each other. Now online is obviously very different, and it's not a "design sub" issue. Go to the photography sub, go to the gaming sub, go to a sports team sub, and you'll see it's the same shit there. But you think designers are mean shitty people? What about the ones spending hours to days creating tutorials and design packs and free fonts for anyone to use? It's a very time consuming thing to do, and they do it often. For people they will never meet, or even get a "Thank you" from.

Reading through your comment history, I see you getting mad a lot. And it really stems from two things. 1) There's this phenomenon when a new artist is just starting out can't take any kind of judgement, good or bad. They're at a very fragile point during something new that comes from a very personal place that any kind of opinion affects them tremendously. New artists(or designers) have just learned to "create", and these creations feel like their babies. You'll find that after creating a million designs, not all of them are so personal. The first 50 designs you ever make are probably your worst ones. You haven't had the experience to refine your style and skills yet(see the 10,000 hour rule). So your best stuff is actually a few years from now. 2) The reason people may have "attacked you" here is because amateurs in your shoes are the ones ruining our industry. Now be patient, and hear me out. Not saying this is who you are personally, but very very often, some kid goes and buys photoshop, starts making "graphic design" with zero guidance, he now goes around introducing himself as a designer. The problem really starts when this "designer" meets with his mom's bestfriend who is a hairstylist or something and she wants a logo, a website, whatever. This "designer" says "yeah sure, a logo? I don't know how to properly do that, so I'll just charge you $20". Now everyone thinks if you want a logo, go to some kid because this silly art stuff isn't important in real life and ANYONE CAN DO IT for very little money. Now go to dribbble.com, and see why a pro would be annoyedand offended by inexperienced people lowering the expectations of their talents and careers. This is exactly why professionals "attack" newcomers, again, this situation applies to every creative field, not just ours. You'll always see posts like "Hey look at his design I just made" and when you click on it, it's some random ILLUSTRATION of a cat.
