If you're totally unfamiliar with it, it's not all what you think it is.

Almost every anime show & movie has some weird stuff that is unusual to a Western audience, but it's not all weird.And it's not all about sexualizing girls. And it's not all about hyper-edgy super gratuitous ultra bloody so-called "mature" violence. And it's not all about guys screaming and shooting energy beams from their hands, and it's not all about robots. It's not one genre. It's just animation, and it runs the whole gamut, and it is as broad as anything else.

Some of my friends are into some anime, and some aren't. Those who aren't have occasionally been roped into watching something. Though they are reluctant, sometimes they actually like it. Watch what recommendations you get; though - everyone's got different ideas of what you might like and no one will really know that except you.
