I absolutely think that there is a serious rot in the sport of gymnastics that needs to be fixed at the base level. I have been in gyms just like what you have described.

But I want to add that I have seen the gyms that don't do this. There are absolutely gyms and coaches out there doing exactly what you want them to do, and are wonderful places for athletes to come up in.

My final gym (I moved a lot as a kid) was just like this. My coach quite frankly did not give a shit that I was some mediocre athlete that would never get far in the sport. She cared about my accomplishments as a person rather than as a gymnast.
