In terms of the European Championships, Israel are part of the European Athletic Association, and have been since they were first made ‘temporary’ members by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) in 1989.
Prior to this, Israel competed at the Asian Games from 1954 to 1974, however, when the Asian Games Federation became the Olympic Council of Asia in 1982, Israel were excluded for political reasons. This was said to be due to a security risk due to conflict with other Arab nations represented at the Olympic Council of Asia*
