The worst advice I’ve ever gotten was “follow your passion”. I can’t tell you how many friends I’ve seen burn out, go broke, go nowhere, or entirely regret following their passions. If you want to follow your passion, liberate yourself first.

I loved working as a ranch hand as a teen. I wanted to be a cowboy, only cowboys don’t make money. As it turned out I also had a passion for traveling, trying new restaurants, going to spas and wineries. And now after establishing myself in tech sales, in a few short years I can go buy a fucking Ranch if I want one.
