Can vipassana meditation be traumatic or make someone go out of their mind?

This is how I practice. Samatha meditation develops focused attention. Mindfullness develops awareness of what is around oneself without emotional response. Vipassana is sitting with our awareness on what is before us. It is the type of meditation the Buddha taught for getting Enlightened. So if that is what we want from our meditation then that is what we should practice. Do we really want to get up to take the kids to school if we are in the middle of Awakening?

As part of a spiritual practice our daily devotional/meditation/study is geared towards a selfless and compassionate engagement with the world. This creates the metta that is beneficial when we do take time to contemplate and meditate. It may be they day we gain Enlightenment... so it should always be a special day.
