Nope, the trial judge mitigated the charge in sentencing.

(I’m not saying this was necessarily free of bias—I tried to find the order from the judge explaining his reasoning and couldn’t find it to know. But it is worth noting the judge was Asian-American as there was an enormous groundswell of pro-Liang sentiment, including protests, in the Asian-American community in New York. I’m not suggesting any lack of integrity or acuity on the part of the judge; I just think it’s humanly impossible to be completely objective and I wonder how much, if at all, that played in.)

But anyhow, appellate courts still can’t try people, or reduce sentences themselves
