IamA liquor store clerk, AMA!

IamA Summary

/u/NumbahFour

How often do you stop people with fake IDs/how easy is it to tell a real from a fake?

/u/BlondeFTW

I haven't encountered any fakes yet. We're also required by law to run the ID through our card reader which takes care of most of that issue.

/u/jaysunh

Are you legally allowed to keep fake IDs?

I ask because my buddy and I went into a convenience store once and bought alcohol when were both like 18. He had a hilariously bad fake ID. Seriously, it had this big, blank white square on it for no reason.

When the clerk (older middle eastern man) saw it, he said he was keeping it and calling the cops. My buddy jumped straight over the counter, took it from him, dove back over the counter, and we jetted out of that bitch with no beer :(

/u/BlondeFTW

Yes, I am legally allowed to keep fake IDs.

/u/jaysunh

So what would you have done in my situation? I'm seriously curious.

/u/BlondeFTW

If it was as obvious as you said I would've kept it and told you both to leave. I'm also supposed to see both of your IDs so you'd have been screwed anyway. I'm a buzzkill.

/u/jaysunh

Eh, he didn't ask for both our IDs, so that wouldn't have mattered.

I mean, it was very much like a robbery at that point. Would you be expected to fight for the ID or just hand it over?

/u/BlondeFTW

If it got to that point I'd cease to give a shit about the ID. I don't get paid enough to fight for anything.

How many times have you been robbed?

/u/BlondeFTW

I've never been robbed, per se. I've had a woman pay with a roll of "quarters" that turned out to be casino tokens and another customer came in while I was doing a money drop and stole a few hundred off the counter. Other than that I get a lot of morons who think it's funny to joke about robbing me.

What was the craziest experience you've had to deal with?

/u/BlondeFTW

I see a lot of career alcoholics on a daily basis, most of which have lost any fuck they may have had to give. My first week there I had a woman piss her pants while browsing our finest bottom shelf vodka. I do see a lot of pregnant women come in absolutely fucking sloshed, so there's that.

/u/wikipedialyte

Do you sell to visibly pregnant women?

/u/BlondeFTW

Unfortunately, I have to. It kills me but unless they can't show ID or they're belligerent I can't refuse them service.

this makes me sad :(

/u/BlondeFTW

I'm a mother. I can't count the number of times I've had an emotional breakdown for these women's kid/s.

The most expensive drink available in store?

/u/BlondeFTW

Johnny Walker Blue Label at $249.99 for a 750ml bottle.

/u/nagrom0414

How much are Johnny Walker Black and Red labels? I don't drink and I have both unopened and 750 mL in my house.

/u/BlondeFTW

The Johnny Red is around $30 and Johnny Black is something like $42.

What's your favourite wine?

/u/BlondeFTW

I'm not much of a drinker, oddly enough. But, if I had to choose I'd go with Barefoot Pinot Grigio.

Can you tell whenever it is someone's first time in a liquor store? And does anybody ever ask you for recommendations? On that note, do you get discounts?

/u/BlondeFTW

I don't see many first timers, but when I do it's definitely not hard to tell. As for recommendations, absolutely. Most of them are bullshit to get people to spend more money in the store. I mentioned in a comment earlier that I'm not much of a drinker, so I honestly have no clue what I'm talking about half the time :/

And no. No discounts. I get a 5% discount on groceries, but it doesn't apply to booze.

/u/HammyClamshanks

Um...Do you lie about what's good because you make more profit selling one thing over the other?

/u/BlondeFTW

Yeah. It's just part of the job, really.

/u/theflamingskull

How many customers do you have who stop by to pick up a pint every morning?

/u/BlondeFTW

Oh, fuck. We have at least 2 dozen customers that we know by name and most of the time we have their bottle on the counter before they've made it to the counter. It's pretty depressing, to be completely honest.

/u/spaidly

How many times a day do people ask for Pappy Van Winkle?

/u/BlondeFTW

I've had 2 customers ask about it since I started, both were elderly men.
