Jumped to conclusions about an unknown number and may have ruined a new friendship for my GF. *Story in comments*

GF got a text from an unknown number and asks me “who C**** is” first thing in the morning via text, I know a girl by the same name who I dated a few years ago and who my GF now works with but I haven’t mentioned it because I didn’t really care. I say “What” so she forwards the text to me which mentions me and plans I may have with my job. I’m confused at this point first it feels like I’m being confronted because there was no build up to the first text, secondly why does this person know who I am, what I do, and potential plans, so I ask for the number and say I’m going to call it, because someone is playing a dirty trick whether it’s the Ex-GF somehow made a connection to me and my current GF, or someone from my workplace, so I want to know and stop it. I call…. Me: Hey, who is this, I got a text from this number C: This is C****** I’m sorry I got the number from our mutual friend, K**** and was trying to see if A**** (my GF) wanted to get dinner Me: Oh, I’m sorry yeah I’ll let her know Turned out to be a girl we just me, who now probably thinks that I am a crazy BF that keeps my GF in a cage and screens her text since I called from my number and clearly didn’t have the text sent to my phone. I immediately felt embarrassed and like an asshole, and told my GF to give her a call and apologize for me, I’ll apologize for myself if I ever see her again. I’ve tried explaining what was going through my head to my GF but it’s of no use, I still feel like an asshole, especially since my GF immediately after I got off the phone texted me, “I’ll figure out who it is later” followed by “why’d you call?” I’ve never felt like such an asshole. PSA: Don’t ask about who someone is over text without some sort of build up to it. Don’t jump to conclusions
