Ladies, how did you decide what career path to follow? What roadblocks/sidetracks did you encounter along the way?

Not sure really I played a lot of video games and always liked fixing computers, I hated school so I just got a starting level job in helpdesk.

From there I found I really liked computers and started expanding my knowledge to web developing (not design!) and networking. All my friends are nerdy and I live in a relatively small town with lots of job opportunities so I just kept getting new job offers through connections..

Then last year I was made redundant before a five week snowboarding trip from a job I really loved. I decided I was sick of changing jobs every two years and wanted to get out of private and into public(government). Took the first casual private job I was offered and worked there for eight months whilst applying for every semi technical government job I could. Took forever its hard to get a foot in especially at my level... Not going back to my helpdesk wage :P

Anyway one of my good friends was hiring contract positions for his data warehouse department. Only six month contracts but a step into government and I could move from there. I wrote a bullshit resume since I have no DW skill but web developing gave me SQL knowledge and networking gave me logic. Didn't have to interview or anything since its contract so yay I got the position.

So yea now I'm a training DW developer @ 34.. it was never my first choice of career and turns out I love it. I only have to focus on one skill and the job opportunities are exploding. There is always a demand for Data warehouse developers for big $$

I guess my only hiccup is why didn't I do this sooner and I also took three years off my career @ 26 to travel the americas (im Australian) But no regrets I had an awesome time :D

I didn't even finish highschool but I started at the bottom and worked on my knowledge over the years.. but it was my social connections that really opened doors for me half the time.
