My mom is sober for the first time in 10+ years

Hey man, just a heads up that you should tack a “yet” onto all of those—I don’t even get withdrawal symptoms yet, I haven’t lost a job yet, etc. If you keep drinking like this, all of that will come in good time. Withdrawals are inevitable if you keep drinking like this. They’re usually not lethal, but it will be the worst five days of your life. Other things that are still “yets” for you: losing your job, losing your family, going broke, DUI, your second DUI, rehab, jail, breaking some bones, etc.

You have all of that to look forward to if you keep drinking. It’s not a matter of if it will happen, these things are just part of the disease of alcoholism.

r/stopdrinking is a click away if you’re so inclined
