US passes landmark decision in ‘right to repair’ movement

In 2011 Sony removed the ability to run Linux as part of OtherOS on the PS3 fat consoles which was described as a function of the console at the time of purchase. In response, several reverse-engineers started working on restoring it including GeoHot and a still prominent team of reverse-engineers called fail0verflow. They released their findings and Sony decided to sue them to stop the release and spread of this "jailbreak" that was the result of fixing a function of a purchased device that broken on purpose. It was eventually settled/dropped after a series of events, but seeing this just reminded me of how far things have come since those days. One of the members of fail0verflow was a guy named Ben Byer aka Bushing who passed away in 2016. I think he would have liked this news.
