Peter Molyneux Interview: “I haven’t got a reputation in this industry any more”

I feel some measure of pity for the man. He is still living as a developer from 17 years ago. The way you could sell, speak, and interact with the audience is a lot different now. I don't think he actually grasps that the audience has matured, gotten smarter, and you just can't interact in the same ways. His voice used to come from magazines. Now, with kickstarter, it is direct to the gamer. If you make a promise to a gamer and break it, that's different than what is printed in a magazine. People are going to take it a lot more personally and very, very literally.

He's now talking about his next game being social. How? It's clear that his grasp on the internet and how you interact is so very small. He's a guy that actually needs a publisher to keep him on track. That's why the mobile version got so much attention.

It's a real shame because I spent so many hours with his games. I still like to play some of the older ones. He probably feels like garbage for all of the lying (and it is lying, in my view, when you knowingly overpromise). It clearly says in this article that he is promising aggressive timelines on components that don't even belong to him!

And one last point, while the internet pursues its latest witchhunt, never forget that this guy is a great artist who did make great games, but this complaint is about Godus and a history of lying. You need to be able to separate the two. He is an artist that has been trying to model real life and real life interactions into his games. This is no different than artists who tried to put reality on a canvas, or in a sculpture, and so on. If anything, his mistake is running his mouth with the press and even more seriously, running his mouth on kickstarter promises. I believe this same personality flaw which thrives under admiration and attention will keep him in the industry for some time to come, but maybe he gets a little bit more savvy.

Peter, all the best. Create art. But please, control your mouth.
