There is no easy answer to this. People will pick the safe route, work their entire lives, become massively wealthy, and look back on their lives with regret. Other people will pick their passion, end up starving on the street, and think "if only I had picked the safe route". There are no guarantees in life.

The ideal situation of course is your passion and "safe" option align. Most people make concessions and decide what they can tolerate. What is the minimum lifestyle/compensation you can live with? Do you need to do something specific, or can you be happy doing anything in a general field? Or maybe you are okay doing anything as long as it doesn't include XYZ.
