I don't think a lot of people understand that pedophiles come in multiple formd and that the rape of a child is not the only act of pedophiles nor is it normally a random act of lust. Pedophiles that have regressed to the form of predators are very deliberate in their behavior. The children they choose are generally easier to manipulate and the rapists take time to earn the trust before pushing boundaries. Little touches, phrases, or favors are used to gauge the reaction of the child to see if the child is more likely to go along with the predator's desires or to report them. This is called the grooming stage. In fact, this grooming stage is not just for the child, but for the child's caretaker as well. The pedophile will try to gain their trust as well to gain more access to their intended target. In this scenario, I strongly support life in prison amongst the general prison population because it is highly unlikely that therapy will ever change their behavior. If the pedophile was convicted of having/viewing child pornography I think they should be put into therapy because while I personally think it is disgusting to be sexually attracted to children, they have not acted on it and have found an outlet in order to not physically harm a child. In this scenario, the pedophile understands that their urges are not appropriate, but need help overcoming them and I think they should get that help so they don't regress to being predators. Child molestors are in between these two categories where there has been some sexual contact but no penetration and based on the contact should determine length of a prison sentence and option of therapy. (Sorry for the length, but there's too much grey area to simply have a black and white answer)
