When was a doctor startled by your symptoms?

I had a cut on my finger get infected one time, and someone asked me what that purple line going up my arm was. "What purple line? Oh, that one. I dunno. Maybe I should go to the hospital." So I get to the ER and the intake guy notices that it has gone from my finger, all the way up my arm, around the crook and was headed for my heart.

Doctors aren't supposed to show their emotions to patients, but this guy's eyes got big like saucers, and he said "Don't go anywhere. I'll be right back." When he came back, he shot me up with the biggest syringe of antibiotics I've ever seen, and gave me a bottle of pills, telling me to eat two of them right now, and have one every eight hours until they were gone.

Apparently, I was minutes from catastrophe when I arrived at the ER, from blood poisoning.
