EXT. INDUSTRIAL PARK

ED steps out of his car into the late afternoon sun. He pulls out his cellphone and holds it to his ear, waiting.

ED (beat) Hey babe it’s me. Just thought I’d give you a heads up. I’ve got one more stop to make, then I’ll be on my way home. Looks like I won’t be home in time for dinner, but I’ll grab something on the way and meet you at school. Save me a seat, ok? Love you, see you soon.

ED hangs up the phone and walks to the front door of the office he has parked in front of. There is a sign above the door: “Tule Freight, since 1976.” He enters.

INT. OFFICE RECEPTION

A beautiful redheaded secretary, JULIE, is at the front desk. She looks up as ED enters.

ED Hi there.

JULIE Hi, can I help you?

ED I’m here to see Dave. Is he still in? I know it’s almost 5.

JULIE Hmm, he doesn’t have anything on his calendar….

ED That’s ok. I’m from corporate, down from Sacramento. I was in the area for a couple of meetings, and thought I’d swing by to check some numbers with him.

JULIE Ok, let me just give him a ring and make sure he’s still in his office, Mr…?

ED (already walking past JULIE) Smith. And don’t worry, he’s expecting me.

INT. DAVE’s OFFICE

A heavy-set man, DAVE, is sitting behind his desk. He is pale and sweating, clearly nervous. ED enters without knocking. DAVE’S phone rings.

DAVE (into the phone) Hello? Yes he’s right here, thank you Julie.

DAVE hangs up the phone.

ED Pretty girl.

DAVE Julie is great, we’re lucky to have her. Have a seat.

ED I’d rather stand. I won’t be here long. You know who I am?

DAVE (beat) Yes.

ED Then you know why I’m here. What did you do with it?

DAVE What did I do with what?

ED Don’t play dumb, asshole. What did you do with it?

DAVE I made my delivery.

ED Yea, you did. We gave you 20 bricks, pure. You delivered 20 bricks cut to shit, but you charged full price. Buyers are pissed, people are ODing on laundry detergent, or whatever shit you cut it with. People are noticing. Fuck, 60 Minutes ran a story on coke in the valley last night. Did you really think we wouldn’t come looking?

DAVE I delivered what you asked me to deliver. If it wound up being shit, it’s because you gave me shit to move.

ED (beat) We gave you shit to move? You really think we’re a bunch of amateurs? C’mon Dave, what are you doing? You’ve got a good thing going here. You’re making good money, you’re an upstanding citizen, you’re running for City Council next year for Christ’s sake. Why throw that away for a couple extra grand? Are you in trouble somehow? Do you need us to bail you out? All you had to do was ask.

DAVE I’m doing fine.

ED Yea I bet you are. So what was the point? Why screw us on this one?

DAVE I didn’t screw any one.

ED Yea, except us. And the buyers. And their customers. Why? Seriously, what was the point? If you’ve got another angle tell me, it sounds like the kind of thing I might want in on, if it’s worth fucking with people like me. Why the risk? (beat) What would you future constituents say if they knew their new councilman was moving dope? (beat) What about your wife? What about Julie?

DAVE What about her?

ED (long beat) How long have you two been fucking?

DAVE Excuse me?

ED It’s pretty obvious chief. Don’t get me wrong, way to go, you’re punching way above your weight on that one.

DAVE Hey now, I never –

ED Actually you know what? Things makes perfect sense now. You got a good thing going here, things are chugging along, life is grand. But you know what? You seem like the kind of guy who always wants more. Never satisfied with what he’s got. So you get in bed with us. The extra money is good – I’m sure the family loves the new pool you just put in. (beat) But you want more. So you hire Julie, and you go to work. She’s got you spending, and on what? Fancy dinners? Jewelry? Maybe a new car? But things get out of hand, and now you’re in deep, you need someplace to put her. So you buy her a house over by 99, a nice little love nest for the two of you. And you need to pay for it. So you fuck us. You fuck us Dave. Your partners. You take our coke, and you cut it and you sell it like it’s prime. And you pocket the difference. But you’ve still got the stuff you cut out. You’re looking for a buyer. How am I doing so far? (beat) So you fuck us. For a redhead. A hot redhead, to be fair. Don’t get me wrong, I’d do the same thing if I weren’t married. But is it worth it? Sure would be a shame if the wife and kids found out.

DAVE Is that a threat?

ED Does it have to be? So now you’re in a predicament. You got yourself in deep, and you crossed some very, very dangerous people. Least of all me. They will come looking for you, and when they find you, they will kill you. And probably Julie. Maybe your wife. You want that? (long beat. DAVE is silent) You’ve made a mess of things, is my point. But there is a solution here. If I was here to kill you I would have done it by now. I’m not here to kill you. I’m here to clean this up. Our business arrangement is over, permanently, but we’re not going to leave any bodies behind. So let’s fix this, and then let’s go our separate ways. Do you want to do that?

DAVE (beat) Yes.

ED Good. Now I know you haven’t sold it yet, so you’ve still got it. Where is it?

EXT INDUSTRIAL PARK. ED walks out the front door carrying a duffel bag. He picks up his phone, dials, puts it to his ear as he walks to his car.

ED Hey I got it… I know, I’ll deliver it on my way home… No. I’ll tell Church what happened, he’ll take care of it… Who cares? No blood on our hands… Got it. Later.

(ED hangs up, then dials another number)

Hey babe… yea I know… I know… look I’m sorry ok? Meetings ran a bit long… Don’t worry, I’ll eat on the way and meet you at school. I’ll get there before the curtain goes up… I know she’s been looking forward it, and I wouldn’t miss this for the world… Honey, I would literally kill to see her first recital… Ok. Love you too, see you soon.

(ED hangs up as he tosses the duffel into the trunk and gets in the drivers seat. He starts the car and looks at the car’s GPS)

ED (to himself) Ok, where is the nearest flower shop?
