Black lives matter protester yells at Bernie Sanders; one of the movements biggest supporters. The protesters prevented him from making his speech in Seattle today.

I'm also a South African, and I definitely cannot agree with what you are saying, and it saddens me that people are eating it up because it happens to confirm their world view.

While there are some instances where some black people, especially those in the upper class, use the apartheid regime as a shield against any criticism, in most cases this is perfectly transparent. They are individuals who make excuses, and each claim is to be examined on its individual merits. There is no pandemic of false claims of mistreatment, in my view, and in general I do not see an agenda being pushed in this regard.

In fact, there seems to me to be a much greater problem of white people specifically ignoring or undermining any claim that black people are still at a disadvantage due to apartheid, and that they still face significant amounts of racial discrimination in certain regards. How many times have you heard "apartheid is over, can we just stop talking about it?" said whenever the conversation steers toward addressing the very real inequality in our society? Some people seem to hold up unfounded claims of discrimination ("apartheid caused load shedding") to dismiss the concept of inequality itself.

And, again, this seems to be happening in this thread as well. BlackLivesMatter is a worthy cause, seeking to address undeniable social inequalities. That there will be fringe groups is inevitable, just as it is inevitable that some people will abuse our past, but that does not undermine the core idea of the movement. Yes, some people are using it as an excuse to be an ass, but that doesn't make the message worthless. If that were the case then all civil rights movements would have to be ignored.
