Getting a gun is difficult here. Citizens can only own shotguns and they need to get their hunting permit before applying for the gun permit. Getting a hunting permit requires you to be part of a hunting association and sit an exam. There's an investigation where police go around asking about your character, past behaviour, etc... Most applications are rejected.

My country isn't big on self-defense, even carrying pepper spray or a taser is illegal. It sucks because armed muggings are common and they often target, and if you don't have anything to give them they will sometimes slash your face out of spite and you will never see justice in most cases.
