This guy was counter protesting at the Klan rally in Charlottesville Virginia over the removal of a civil war statue.

Seriously, destroying these things is the last thing we should be doing. We treasure all of the statues we still have from the ancient world, yet so many were destroyed for petty reasons and it's a real shame. In 2000 years a squabble like this, people still fighting over the color of people's skin and a war that ended over 150 years before, and thinking that suddenly getting rid of a statue will fix everything will seem pretty petty.

Don't get me wrong, prejudice and bigotry is still very real. But we need to stop making it a north vs. south thing, a Civil War thing. That's just dumb. Stop looking at the past with a modern eye and judging them for things we understand much more about than they did. It was wrong then, yes, but it was a very different society with a very different world view. And yes, the North was just as complicit before and after the war.

So yes, fight for equality, a lot of groups still have to and it's ridiculous, but they do. But fight in meaningful ways and do something that will actually change your situation. Riling people up over something as small as a statue is just going to breed more contempt and harden the people who are already against you while turning others who happen to have liked the statue and now blame your movement for getting rid of it.
