How did you gals and guys manage to pull through for so long?

You're doing great!

Some things that can be helpful:

Early Tips

Treat yourself: really though - when I initially decided to cut it out completely, every night I didn't drink would mean candy or takeout. Clearly not sustainable long term, but early on it helped a lot to have something I was excited about consuming instead

Find hobbies to dive into: You're going to suddenly find yourself with a lot more open time, which is awesome! For me, fitness and weightlifting was great, because it A) had a progression to work towards, and B) is way better when sober, so it gave another reason to keep at it. Really important to find something to dive into because it's way easier to dive into a new habit than it is to constantly resist an old one

*Join r/stop drinking": really helpful to get encouragement and see other people on the same path. I eventually left after 6 months or so but it helped early on

Later Tips

Skip attempts at "moderation" if drinking has become enough of a problem that you're choosing to cut it out, trust that choice and skip the "moderation" phase. I tried various versions, like X number of days a week, or even just once a month for about a year, and I still regret some of the screw ups that came from them. Just skip this step lol

Social Changes quitting drinking can have social consequences, but I honestly haven't felt many, and it gets easier the further out you are from college. Most people settle down and develop more engaging interests anyways, so this was pretty easy

*What to say": honestly I just say "no thanks, I'm good" and if people press me on it (pretty much never, except family occasions or something big that warrants champagne) i just say no thanks I don't drink. It doesn't require an explanation and I've had basically no problem with this

Good luck and feel free to reach out at any point! You're going to be so happy with this down the line and every small step is a good one
