Just watched The Black Phone and I thoroughly enjoyed this film… until the end (spoilers)

Great points. I agree. I never felt as though the protagonist was ever in any real danger so there was never a real pay off. They mention the Grabber is playing a game with his victims called “naughty boy” and he tries to nudge them into breaking the rules so he can punish them. I would have loved to explore that more and see how he reacts if Finney somehow “beats” his game. They have the whole thing with the Grabbers brother slowly unraveling the mystery which could have been an awesome sub plot but that goes nowhere then it’s framed as though the cops are in a race against time to save Finney…but they’re not at all. They go to the wrong house, a 10 year old breaks a grown man’s neck with a cord (I suppose his arm IS “mint”) and then he just casually walks out.

I’d give this like a 6/10 at best. Maybe recommend it to someone to watch with young teenagers for a fun halloween activity or someone who hasn’t had much exposure to horror since they’d probably get a bit more out of it.
