LPT: If you're a pet owner and your pet has to be put down, please be there with them when it happens. I know it's hard for you, but your beloved pet's last thought and emotion will be "where is my best friend? Why did they leave me here all alone?" followed by fear and immense sadness.

Can definitely attest to this.

Roughly 3 years ago, I drove up about 2 hours from university to see my cat of 15 years a day before euthanization. It was definitely a rough couple of days before that, but on the day of the euthanization, I had the chance to sit with my cat. I really tried my hardest to not be sad in front of her, but rather happy that she wouldn't be going through with the pain anymore. It was until the moment that the vet managed to finally put in the syringe that my (affectionate when she wanted to be) cat put her paw on my hand during her last moments. It tore my heart to pieces and I wouldn't let it go for a few weeks.

Every moment hurt more than it should have, but I'm glad that I had this last moment to share with her.
