Men of AskMen, when was the last time you self checked for testicular cancer?

At 17, possibly younger, I noticed a secondary mass on my left testicle. Previous sports physical doctors actually never said anything if they noticed it or didn’t notice it. This is a huge problem and why I advise checking yourself and being familiar with how things feel. The mass is actually about 1/3 the size of my testicle and is soft. It was certainly there when they performed them as I knew about it but never asked about it.

At 18 right before college I asked a doctor to check it out as no physicals I had said anything. His reaction scared me. As he simply told me “oh, you do have something going on there.” He immediately set me up with appointments with a urineologost who then set me up to get an ultrasound.

I told my parents who then informed me my father had testicular cancer. My heart dropped and resulted in an anxiety for my well-being for the rest of my life from the stress of the situation.

Following the ultrasound I was told it wasn’t cancerous. It’s a spermetacele (spelling) if I remember correctly. Simply put, it’s a cyst.

It does feel tender from time to time when I walk. But I always check things and keep myself familiar.

TLDR; had a cyst at 16-17 that doctors for sports physicals didn’t notice. I had to specify to my family doctor to check which resulted in worry that I had testicular cancer like my father did.
