Millennials just can't catch a break

You and I are in a similar boat. I've applied for office/admin jobs too and heard nothing back. I've spent hours reading resume/cover letter advice, tweaking my communication, etc. I recently had an interview for something I was actually qualified for and it's been dead air since. My GPA was great, actually (some guy PMed me accusing me of poor grades).

I do take responsibility for a lot of it but it's always amusing when people jump on you and assume it's something you did or didn't do that led you to be unsuccessful. Lots of factors are beyond your control (internal hiring processes, market demand for your degree, etc).

You could've gone into uni in a field that's in high demand and get out after the demand has peaked. What about all those people who graduated into the recession - did they just not pull their bootstraps hard enough?

I think people, often Americans, subscribe to this doctrine of "it's their own fault" because they're afraid that if there are forces beyond their control that can alter the outcome, they might not be successful even if they try their hardest. It's a control thing - people hate not being in control, and hate other people implying their future is not 100% within their control. It's possible to work your hardest and do your best and still fail.

That said, don't let that discourage you - keep trying your hardest and doing your best. Just don't be too hard on yourself if you're not where you wanted to be. I wish you the best of luck, my friend.
