i really wish.

The so called "women" careers nursing, social work, teaching, are not low paying jobs.

As a teacher I have to agree that they're not low paying jobs. However they are not paid at the same level as other professions.

They are professionals, and nurses really shouldn't even be included in the same category.

Just out of curiosity, why?

That being said, I know a lot of unemployed social workers and teachers. This is not due to standards, its due to demand.

And I say that the low demand is quite possibly correlated with the low standards. In my country (Malta, EU) a good teacher can make more than triple the amount of money per hour giving private lessons in the evening than they do in their regular job at school. And there's high demand. I have students ask me regularly if I give private lessons only to turn them down because l give more value to my time with my family in the evening.

If there were not enough teachers, then we would see wages rise. I'm not saying they don't deserve more, they completely do.

In my country the situation happened with nurses. Few people want to go into nursing here so health institutions have to pay nurses quite a good wage. My wife is one and she makes loads more than I do as a teacher. Lowering nurses' standards won't work because while a good deal of people tend to be fine with being ignorant (some even flaunt the fact) most complain profusely when their health suffers. Therefore in order to keep the demand for nursing professionals low employers create jobs for staff which are ancillary to nurses such occupational therapists and carers. These perform duties which were traditionally performed by nurses but which are usually deemed non-critical. Due to the nature of these jobs more people qualify to carry them out and this results in lower wages and less demand for nurses. In practice the nurses have to cover for these staff members when they goof up. When even these measures fail to keep demand low, employers actively advertise nursing positions abroad and import nurses from other countries which are fine with having lower pay.
