No actually she did. I follow the rule of three when there is a problem.

1.) The first time I have a problem I will tell you, "Hey, I don't like _____________ because it makes me feel ______________."

2.) If the problem continues, the second time I will tell you, "Hey, I had told you about not liking _________, and it would mean a lot to me if you respected my feelings about this issue." A little more firm with my approach, but still letting them make the decision if they want to resolve the issue.

3.) If I have to bring it up a third time I am going to sound like someone's Mom. "I have mentioned numerous times that this bothers me and it continues to be an issue." If I can't live with whatever the problem is and they can't work with me to find a resolution, this is the point in time that I clarify in a very forward manner that I am unable to tolerate the issue.

I let people know in advance if I am unhappy and that a potential breakup may happen. It isn't fair to the other party for me to just waylay them with an unexpected breakup. There are too many people who don't communicate properly and don't work as a team to fix a problem. Those may not be legal crimes, but they are crimes against the heart.

So either OP was getting the ring to try to save a relationship he knew was failing, or his SO wasn't fair in breaking up with him.

And if you're thinking, "Maybe there wasn't a problem maybe she just wasn't happy.." The problem was that she was not happy and did not communicate those feelings and as to why she felt that way before she let the relationship fail. OP shouldn't have been at the point where he felt like they were moving forward while she was at the point that she felt like it was over. That's a sure sign of awful communication.

Is she a bad person? No. But someone better will communicate in a manner that is both healthy and expresses love for other's.
