York community to get first rabbi since Jews expelled from England in 1290

This is really wonderful news, well done Ben Rich! I hope that after 730 years the community can now begin to feel truly at home in York again. As a Liberal Jew, this has been a great piece of news to wake up to.

What they did in 1190 was an absolute disgrace (an that is putting it very mildly). I'm very interested in our history in Britain and have been studying it as part of a course. I'll post some sources of info for those who may be interested.

Here is an article from the history of York that has some detail. Proceed with caution, it's an upsetting read: http://www.historyofyork.org.uk/themes/norman/the-1190-massacre

An English Heritage piece: https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/cliffords-tower-york/history-and-stories/massacre-of-the-jews/

It is important to note that York and their local government are fully aware of and acknowledge this awful part of their history. They extend their annual Holocaust memorial period to include remembrance of those who were victim to this barbarism.
