My son is 7 days old. My conservative relatives don't understand why I haven't made the circumcision appointment yet.

Sorry, I did sound rude, and that wasn't how I meant to come off.

It should be cleaned anyway. That gets nasty still, even when its circumcised and not cleaned. Cleaning really is the biggest deal. But, if the parents don't want to clean it, they have bad habits. The kid grows up and sees parents with bad habits, they don't clean themselves good in a shower. It gets passed on more than you'd think. As a female swimmer, you'd be surprised how many people I've seen that don't wash well enough. They pay for it.

Basically, the foreskin acts as a protector and keeps bacteria at bay, thus preventing spread of that bacteria to the cervix, which is a pretty tough place to clean. Women obviously still get cervical cancer without uncircumcised partners, but longitudinal studies have been done that show a correlation of circumcision and lower numbers of cervical cancer...and UTIs can be treated with antibiotics, but they are pretty stubborn sometimes, and if there is another underlying medical issue, sepsis could set in. Again, a risk, but not guaranteed. All it takes is one person to experience something and it's a side effect. It's just a way to cover the company's ass.

Also, you shouldn't pay much attention to /u/k_Kat down there. The account is just spewing a circlejerk of circumcision crap and they are clearly part of some movement or something, so you may be getting severely distorted information that is skewed to their personal beliefs. They aren't even acknowledging the other side of things, which is pretty illogical, and says a lot about the type of person they are.

I am a medical professional, so please be aware that there are literally risks with every medical procedure. But, should you choose to let your son make that decision, the risks of him going under general anesthesia as an adult are far more than undergoing a 5 minute procedure by a professional without the infant even remembering it. That being said, I'm not telling you to do it or not to do it, but you just have to weigh the risks of it all. What are the most realistic complications? How can you prevent any? How much will things cost in the future if I do/don't do this?

I personally am going to circumcise my son if I ever have one. To me, I just think it's a no-brainer.
