This is democracy manifest.

Hijacking the top comment to make it clear to people on /r/all that this isn't democracy. Democracy is a system of representation where the people vote in the leaders of society. What this lady is describing is forced redistribution through the welfare state.

To quote /u/anechoicmedia:

Of course, these aren't comparable things, and even if you lack the language to capture that difference precisely, economists have already labeled it for you: public goods and externalities. Most roads are non-excludable goods that everyone has to share and whose existence you benefit substantially from even if you don't pay into it. That's why we use the power of the state to compel payment.

In comparison your child is not an object of public use, and it's birth doesn't require a collective investment vehicle to finance. It's a one-to-one family-to-child relationship where the costs and benefits of the child are mostly on your ledger. It's wholly reasonable to expect individual families to pay their own way in the world and have children at their own expense; The market mechanism to do this is fully functional.

The power to tax is the power to destroy. We use it sparingly to finance essential public goods that the market process cannot coordinate due to external costs and benefits. Introducing the police power of state taxation into the realm of wholly private goods destroys the institutions and ethos of civil society, as individuals are now forced into a directly adversarial relationship where their respective costs of life, upkeep, and reproduction draw from the public ledger.
