I have developed a intense, profound, visceral h-word for all medical doctors

I come from a family of MDs and worked in Healthcare for 11 years. I also have IBD.

To say I am cynical about medicine is an understatement. Are you in the US?

If a doctor accepts insurance it is usually a sign for me they are Not going to be great. As someone who has lived in multiple cities I generally look for doctors who only accept direct payment. This one small detail has helped me quite a bit in finding quality care. This generally only works for primary care. However, be prepared to pay. My current Primary care charges $235 a visit. I've also had membership/concierge care, where I pay a monthly amount but get regular visits/labs as part of that cost.

To this day I have not taken a biologic drug. But when I get a colonoscopy because I need the images to work with my chosen primary doctor, the gastro (almost all are insurance based) always, always, always wants me to start on a biologic. Biologics are extremely expensive and no lie have side effects such as Lymphoma. I still have control over my illness, it has gone back into remission every single time with the care of my doctors not recommending biologics.

Also, since we're here, functional medicine doctors and DOs, often shit on everywhere are a place to start if you're looking but using insurance.

Best of luck. We have a culture that worships modern medicine. It can be very hard to find a doctor who will spend more than 30 minutes proactively looking for a way to help their patients. Patients are the victims of doctors hubris. They've seen 28 patients that day, most of which they spend judging them, not believing them and mostly thinking about their upcoming vacation to Chile for 3 weeks.
