He went to take a nap and never woke up. RIP little buddy.

My dog went through a stroke as well. Almost exactly a year ago, he was completely paralyzed except for his head and hind legs. Drove to the vet immediately and he recommended that he was put down. I just couldn't do it there, in that cold room with nothing but a clean desk and a metal table. We drove back home against the vets opinion. Next day we consulted a vet that we visited while in a different country as we felt we needed a second opinion. He recommended that we wait a week at the max while giving him blood thinning meds that we quite literally begged for (in every case of a stroke they just put the animal down so they were reluctant to give us anything) at the local clinic. The vet that we consulted told us that if there are no signs of improvement in a week we should put him down. He told us that the most important thing is to see if the organism hasn't shut down completely and that if he doesn't pee, poo or eat its pretty much over. After around 3 days of watching him 24h a day and taking shifts with my siblings we took him out to the yard and carried him around. I can tell you that I had never been so happy to get pee over my hands. We kept giving him meds for a week, he started to sip on baby formula that we got him since he couldn't move his head all that well so any solid foods were out of the question. He kept on improving, trying to move around on the bed that we kept him on. Started to lift up his head, turn from his side. After around 2-3 months he started to stand up straight with some help. After 4 months he was already walking albeit clunkily. He was falling down constantly but he still manage to cover a good distance around the house and out on his walks. After 6 months he almost never tripped but we still had to install toddler gates around the house since he moved up the stairs okay but getting down was obviously trickier. I would say he's almost 100% back to normal by now but still trips on the way down stairs so the baby gates had to stay. My dog is 14years old come this July , he's epileptic and had a stroke when 13 and still managed to recover. One tough poodle :)
